A successful flight calibration of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (SSKIA) was conducted as scheduled today by an aircraft of the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACCA).
The ILS system which is most useful during bad weather or at night is made up of mainly two sub-systems, namely the Localizer and the Glidepath. The Localizer ensures that the aircraft is horizontally aligned with the landing area or Runway, it is capable of telling the Pilot that he/she is left or right of the correct approach track while the Glidepath tells the Pilot that he’s vertically on the correct approach angle or above/below it.
The ILS is calibrated every six months.
