The Government of Mauritius advised that tropical cyclone Freddy’s Level three will be raised in Mauritius on 20th of February 2023.
Other than cancellation of all flights the Island will also be closing its securities exchange today.
In a statement dated 19th February national carrier Air Mauritius said it had cancelled all flights to and from Rodrigues
All flights scheduled to/from Rodrigues on Monday 20 February 2023 are cancelled.
Air Mauritius is closely monitoring the situation with the authorities and will keep passengers informed of developments through its Call Centre on 207 7575, on its website at airmauritius.com and through regular communiques.
Another Airline South Africa Airways reported that the Airport will be closed on 20th February for all inbound and outbound traffic.
In neighboring Madagascar Cyclone Freddy is expected to make landfall on Monday as a Category 5 cyclone, with wind gusts of up to 165 mph making it the strongest storm to form anywhere on Earth in 2023 and one of only five category 5 storms ever recorded in February, which could cause torrential rains, widespread flash flooding, dangerous landslides and even deaths.
“The risk for dangerous storm surge, flooding and strong and damaging wind is increasing by the minute and we’re terribly worried for families and children living on the storm path.” Save the Children’s Programme Director for Madagascar, Tatiana Dasy, said.
“Freddy may continue westward after hitting Madagascar and possibly push into Mozambique late next week, though how strong Freddy’s circulation might be if it makes it to Africa, assuming it does, is uncertain.” – weather.com
